Agebuzz Asks: This Week’s Reader Poll: In response to the September 25th reader poll regarding whether you plan to get the COVID or flu shot, more than half of you stated that you have either gotten both shots or plan to get both shots this fall. Beyond those responses, the answers that garnered the most votes were plans to get the flu shot but not the COVID shot, or no plans to get either shot this fall. Among those who have already received both vaccines or plan to get both, many of you cited your own health vulnerabilities or your strong belief in the science behind these vaccines. Some of you believe you have no risk of getting either illness, or you’ve never gotten either of them before, so there’s no reason to start with a vaccine now. A few of you mentioned no longer having interest in the COVID vaccines, as you stated that you still got COVID despite previous vaccinations, or you do not believe COVID is still a problem. While everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and decisions regarding vaccination, the scientific consensus continues to support the value of both vaccines. Even if the vaccines do not outright prevent infection, they at least lower the risk of serious illness. We will continue to monitor and report on federal and state guidance on these vaccines, as well as trends in the outbreak of these two illnesses this fall and winter. For those who remain unsure as to what to do, there is still plenty of time for you to do your homework and opt for the decision that you and your physician feel is best for you.
