This Week’s Reader Poll: In response to the March 12th reader poll on whether you are experiencing any financial difficulties affording your basic necessities these days, fully ½ of respondents said they were able to cover all of their expenses at this time. That is fortunate and, it appears, increasingly uncommon. According to The National Council on Aging, approximately half (about 27 million) of Americans aged 60 and older have incomes below what is needed to cover basic necessities like housing, food, and healthcare. Furthermore, 80% of older adults face financial insecurity, lacking the resources to weather major financial shocks such as long-term care needs or high medical expenses.

Those who shared their struggles described a wide range of financial realities. Many of you are forgoing essentials like home repairs and dental care, or living on the edge of insecurity regarding food, housing, and insurance. While some have returned to work to cover expenses, others rely on frugal living and careful retirement planning to get by. Whether you feel exasperated, grateful, or stoic, most are facing these rising costs with a clear-eyed sense of reality. Here’s hoping we can weather this economic storm together

Bonus Question: If you still own and drive a car, do you anticipate giving up driving sometime in the future?
