This Week’s Reader Poll: In response to the March 12th reader poll on whether you still go to theaters to watch movies, close to 30% said you don’t really watch movies, but if you do, you watch from home. Almost as many said you watch movies regularly, but on your home television or computer. Another popular response was from those who reported that they frequently or occasionally go to the theater to watch a new movie. So, all told, it appears we have many who enjoy movies, but less so in a movie theater. The reasons many of you gave ring true: Especially since COVID, theaters have less appeal, or can be expensive, or today’s movies are not really intended for older adults. Recent data from the Pew Research Center underscores some of this: only 39% of Americans aged 65 and older surveyed said they had been to a movie theater in the past year. In fact, while theater-going has picked up since COVID, it has not returned to its pre-pandemic levels. Many of us upgraded equipment or streaming services during the pandemic and found that we had better control of the viewing environment and a better selection of movies of interest in our own homes. But if you are planning a movie outing this year, take a look at the Rotten Tomatoes list of the most anticipated movies of 2026!
