This Week’s Reader Poll: In response to the May 29th reader poll regarding whether you have put aside money to pay for personal care assistance in your home, the reactions were mixed and not particularly robust. Perhaps this is a topic many shy away from considering, as it suggests a future of decline and dependency. About 20% of respondents stated they have sufficient funds to pay for help, at least for a limited period. After that, responses varied. A small percentage of respondents were fortunate to have long-term care insurance, but even some of those respondents were not sure they could continue to afford the premiums or whether the insurance would cover all of their needs. A great many said they did not have available funds and weren’t sure what they would do, or would need to ask for financial help. Some hoped that the need wouldn’t arise before they passed away, or stated that they would do without help and hope for the best. The overall impression left is that for many, thinking about your future needs and how you can pay for help is a sobering and difficult thing to contemplate, a topic that our country as a whole seems unable to grapple with as well.
