This Week’s Reader Poll Results: Thank you to everyone who responded to our June 18th poll about whether politicians should face a mandatory retirement age. By far, the most popular response was that all politicians should have term limits. Many of you mentioned that politics should not be a never-ending career, and that it’s important to allow fresh faces and fresh ideas to enter the political arena once a person has served a few terms. Your enthusiasm about term limits mirrors a recent poll by NPR, which found that 8 out of 10 Americans favor age caps and term limits on members of Congress. The NPR survey respondents reflected a broad consensus among all ages and political parties that we need to limit career politicians and give others a chance to serve. Many of you also suggested that term limits should be accompanied by age limits or, at a minimum, physical and cognitive testing, though some of you acknowledged that, since everyone ages differently, using arbitrary age limits might not be fair. But there was little disagreement that no one has the right to make a career out of politics, and especially with so many future issues hanging in the balance, younger members of society need more of a say in the political process. Thank you all so much for sharing your strong opinions on this question!
