Truth and Humor of Life After 65:

The Poetry of Jane Seskin

Jane Seskin is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and the author of 13 books. She’s written nonfiction articles and poetry online and for national magazines and journals (including 20 poems published in Cosmopolitan Magazine, 5 poems in Woman’s Day, and 18 posts in the NY Times Metropolitan Diary). She has also been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.

Today's poem is reprinted with permission from her latest book of poetry, “Older Wiser Shorter: The Truth and Humor of Life After 65.” Seskin’s poetry is authentic, funny, insightful, quirky, and heartfelt. A Reading Guide to the poems is also included and will inspire further reflection and discussion for book and women's groups. Newly revised with 26 additional poems!

This Week’s Reader Poll: In response to the July 24th reader poll regarding changes to your hair as you’ve gotten older, this question clearly struck a chord with many of you. With more poll responses than usual, many commented on the color and texture changes you’ve experienced, along with a substantial number of you remarking on the problems of dealing with thinning hair. Many are juggling multiple hair problems at once and sound frustrated with the situation, adding issues such as scalp dryness and itching, along with balding, to the mix of problems. There’s probably little comfort in knowing that a significant number of older men and women are confronted with these problems, and a few of you stated that cancer changed your hair situation, but you are just grateful to have gotten beyond that, even if your hair never quite recovered. While we have no easy answers to help you with your hair, you may find these few links helpful as you try to make a truce with your unruly hair! So grab your brush and look here, here, and here!

“The question people have to ask themselves is, what do you want to do with these last vital years of your life? You may not be a CrossFit athlete or an Ironman triathlete, but today you can walk. And tomorrow, you can walk farther.”
