This Week’s Reader Poll: In response to the July 17th reader poll regarding measures you’ve taken to make your home safer or more comfortable, ⅓ of respondents stated that they had put up bathroom grab bars or additional stair rails. Beyond that, there were a variety of changes mentioned, but none garnered significant responses. Some of you described efforts to anticipate disability, such as moving to a home where your bedroom is on the main level or building a place that is handicap accessible. A few of you bravely admitted you’d done nothing, or you didn’t feel any changes were necessary. However, it's important to note that 45% of adults over age 75 report having a disability, and the rates of deadly community-based falls have risen significantly among older adults. While many may be reluctant to admit that they are at risk or, for some other reason, unwilling to make accommodations or changes in anticipation of the need, it may nonetheless be beneficial to have an expert survey your home situation and provide ideas and suggestions on what could be done to make your home safer or more compatible for aging.
