This Week’s Reader Poll: In response to the December 4th reader poll about finding out test results for Alzheimer’s before symptoms appear, the majority of respondents were in favor of knowing their test results, even if they had no symptoms to suggest they would go on to have Alzheimer’s. What responses were most popular? Interestingly, so many of you described differing reasons for wanting to know. For some, it was to enable you to put your affairs in order, either to lessen the burden on family or because you live alone and there’s no one else to take on this task. Others mentioned wanting to accomplish some important tasks while you still can, or travel you would want to enjoy while still possible. A few of you even mentioned the possibility of using the information to bring your life to a close before it became too much for you or your family to handle 😢. At the moment, there is no generally available test to give you this sort of information in the absence of some symptoms. However, the technology will likely advance to the point in the not-too-distant future, so that we will be able to “see the future” and make this sort of prediction. So it’s likely this issue will arise for many of us (or our children) sometime in the coming decade. Stay tuned.
