This Weekβs Reader Poll: In response to the August 21st reader poll regarding how often you spend time with younger generations, more than half of respondents reported that they regularly spend time with younger people, either friends or family members. Those who claim they donβt have regular interactions still report conversations with younger people as they go about their daily activities, such as shopping, receiving care or help, or through volunteer work. This is encouraging news, as too often these days, so many of us live in age-segregated βsilos,β making it easy to never interact with those from different generations. This lack of intergenerational interaction is a losing proposition for young and old alike, as each has an age-specific perspective along with experiential wisdom that could open up new opportunities and insights for the other. Moreover, in this era of social isolation and loneliness, intergenerational relationships are a win-win, creating new occasions for social engagement and offering refreshing invitations for new experiences. Many of you reported the pleasure you get from going to a performance or dinner with younger people. So when the opportunity presents itself- or when you have the chance to make it happen- take advantage of spending some time with those younger than you. Theyβll appreciate the experiences you have to share, and youβll benefit from the new insights and interest coming your way!
