This Week’s Reader Poll Results: Thank you to everyone who responded to our August 20th poll about whether you have been affected by an extreme weather event. Almost half of our respondents stated they had been affected in some way. Many of you described losing property as a result of fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, or flooding, with some moving away from their original area as a result. Others of you passionately described the difficulty you have had with extreme heat, which has limited your outdoor activities and become a drain on your budget with the constant need for air conditioning, in addition to aggravating asthma or other breathing issues. Several of you described cold weather conditions that were also challenging, including ice storms and sub-freezing temperatures. Despite these extreme weather events, however, many of you said that you have no plans to leave your area: It’s home and where you belong. And fortunately, some of you have not been seriously affected by any of these difficult conditions. Nonetheless, September is National Preparedness Month, a good time to make repairs, get emergency go-bags ready, and connect with neighbors and loved ones to make sure you are ready should a disaster strike your area.
