This Weekβs Reader Poll: In response to the April 23rd reader poll on Social Security, unsurprisingly, there were a lot of big feelings about the current state of our Social Security system. While there was a general sense that those of you who receive Social Security (and not everyone does!) were grateful to have it, for more than a few of you, whether you had other additional income or not, there was concern that Social Security payments are not sufficient and not keeping up with the real cost of living these days. Many of you made clear that you had paid into the system and placed trust in the system, so you were unhappy that, at this point in your life, you had to worry about whether the system would survive, and you were disappointed in the actual payments you received, given the high cost of so many items these days. There was a lot of frustration expressed about the COLA adjustments to your payments each year. While Social Security was never intended to be a robust retirement insurance plan, it was intended to provide a safety net to older adults in their later years, and for many of you, that promise seems to be falling far short these days.
What has been most surprising to you about your health as youβve gotten older?
- I didnβt expect to lose my balance and occasionally fall down
- I didnβt expect to be as fatigued and sleepy as I feel
- I didnβt anticipate the decline in my hearing and eyesight
- I didnβt realize the impact that chronic disease would have on my quality of life
- I didnβt realize I would be able to continue being so physically active at my age.
- I didnβt realize that with exercise I could actually be stronger than I was when I was younger
- I assumed I would lose my cognitive abilities as a regular part of aging, but I havenβt!
- Some combination of the above responses
- I never thought about what my health would be like in my later years, so no surprises.

Bonus Question: If you could change one thing about your current health status, what would that be?
